TOKYO, Jul 02, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- NTT DoCoMo Inc. (TSE:9437) will begin selling the first handset in Japan based on Google Inc's Android operating system on July 10, offering a direct competitor with the iPhone 3GS, which was released June 26 by rival Softbank Mobile Corp.

Made by Taiwan's HTC Corp., the HT-03A features a 3.2-inch touch screen, a built-in GPS (Global Positioning System) antenna and a digital compass.

The service plan DoCoMo will provide with the phone will take full advantage of Google functionality, including Web searches, maps, e-mail, video and Street View, which allows users to view panoramic pictures of their surroundings as they move about.

With the 31,500 yen (US$326.27) discount that DoCoMo offers for smart phones, the handset is expected to cost around 25,000 yen.
