JAPAN SYSTEM DEVELOPERS EYE DEMAND GROWTH FOR VIRTUALIZATIONTOKYO, Jan 05, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Expecting stronger demand in 2009 from businesses looking to streamline information systems and cut costs, Japanese system integrators have set up facilities for promoting virtualization technology. Virtualization allows information technology resources to be exploited in a highly efficient manner by enabling one computer to be used as if it were several, or multiple computers to be used as if they were single machine. Fujitsu Ltd. (TSE:6702) opened a virtualization solutions center last month near East Japan Railway Co.'s (TSE:9020) Hamamatsucho station in Tokyo. Equipped with 320 servers, 40 data storage devices and other Fujitsu products, the center has been used to show potential customers how they can reduce system introduction and maintenance costs by embracing virtualization. Hitachi Ltd. (TSE:6501) established a similar facility in October near JR East's Shinagawa station. The firm previously used a server factory in Hadano, Kanagawa Prefecture, as a testing facility for virtualization technology. By moving the Tokyo, the company hopes to pitch virtualization to more businesses. Meanwhile, IBM Japan Ltd. opened in August a base for promoting cloud computing technology at an existing office in Harumi, Tokyo. Using virtualization technology, the firm links customers' IT equipment together and creates in-house cloud computing networks, allowing their employees to access corporate servers from personal computers at their desks and take advantage of the servers' capabilities. With other system integrators also stepping up efforts to promote virtualization technology, offering ease of use by also addressing software issues will likely become key to prevailing amid intensifying competition.
