Japan calls on new Israeli gov't to continue peace efforts+


(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)TOKYO, March 29_(Kyodo) _ Japan called Wednesday on the new Israeli government, to be set up after Tuesday's election, to continue peace efforts with the Palestinians.

"Our country expects that Israel's new government will continue efforts to realize peace with the Palestinians," Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe said at a news conference.

According to local media exit polls, Israeli interim Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's Kadima party was heading for a victory in the election.

Israel's acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert declared victory in Tuesday's election as initial returns showed his centrist Kadima party winning at least 28 of the 120 seats in parliament.
