IT security spending on rise

Apr 14, 2012 (Bangkok Post - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Spending on computer security in Thailand will grow by 13-15% this year, fuelled by a growing awareness that data loss is a real possibility, says the industry research firm IDC.

Aisshwarya Kapoor, senior market analyst at IDC (Thailand), said security spending in Thailand would rank second in value on the IT spending table, behind only database management.

She said more companies were making security spending a priority to ensure data leakage originating from employees' mobile devices would not allow outsiders access to corporate IT systems.

"In Thailand, fraud through online banking services is still the most feared cyber attack," Ms Kapoor said.

Mobile malware, a malicious software on smartphones, has been increasing rapidly since late last year and would become a serious concern for users, said Alex Kirk, a senior researcher for the vulnerability research team at Sourcefire, a network intrusion prevention and detection system provider.

Android-based smartphones are the major target for mobile malware writers.

Mr Kirk urged companies to have concrete security policies and back them with proper enforcement.

Simon Piff, associate vice-president for enterprise infrastructure at IDC Asia-Pacific, compared computer security to insurance; companies may not want to spend money on it, but they have to.

He believes companies will invest more in data monitoring, analytic tools and data-leak prevention systems as security breaches increase.
