ISC Enhances Interoperability and Management With BIND 9.5

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) REDWOOD CITY, CA, June 9 / MARKET WIRE/ --

Internet Systems Consortium, Inc., a
leader in Internet infrastructure software, has released version 9.5 of
BIND, its industry standard Domain Name System (DNS) software. With over
18 months of development and testing, BIND 9.5 provides several internal
processing improvements and feature additions, including an optional
XML-based statistics channel and interoperability with Active Directory.
BIND 9.5 is available for download today from Internet Systems Consortium,
Inc. (ISC) at http://www.isc.org/sw/bind/.

DNS technology is used to convert recognizable or human-readable names such
as website domain names and email addresses to computer network addresses.
ISC's BIND software is the most complete reference implementation of the
DNS protocol. BIND is the most widely used DNS software which comes with a
server, a caching resolver and support tools. Features include DNSSEC for
assuring the authenticity of DNS data, IPv6 capabilities and Dynamic DNS
support. BIND 9.5 is available at no charge under a non-restrictive BSD
license. It runs on various UNIX platforms and Windows 2000/XP/2003
binaries are available.

"The new statistics feature provides basic data about the health of a BIND
9 server and is intended for DNS administrators to access," said Joao
Damas, ISC BIND Product Manager. "The data is available in XML and we look
forward to the community creating tools and monitoring applications to take
advantage of and enhance this feature. What is available today was based
upon requests from the BIND user bases and ISC Forum members."

In BIND 9.5, ISC has made major improvements to the internal housekeeping
tasks related to caching resolvers, with significant improvements in speed
and responsiveness for servers that serve a large number of client machines
and/or have a large DNS cache. The release also provides support for DNS
within Active Directory. BIND 9.5 implements the GSS-TSIG authentication
mechanism used with DNS dynamic update in Microsoft Active Directory. BIND
9.5 makes fallback from EDNS to plain DNS more visible and can help
identify broken servers, firewalls, and networks. EDNS is required for
digitally signed DNS answers using DNSSEC.

"Community support is critical for an application that is at the heart of
the Internet. Whether it be testing pre-release versions of BIND,
suggesting new features, contributing changes to BIND or donations enabling
ISC to meet our goals of providing quality open source software, we are
grateful for the participation," stated Paul Vixie, president and founder
of ISC. "Relevance is essential and the community keeps us on track."
