IRANIAN ISSUE TO BE SETTLED BY DIPLOMATIC MEANS - BRENTON

(Interfax News Agency Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)MOSCOW. April 12 (Interfax) - British ambassador to Russia Tony Brenton hopes that the situation surrounding the Iranian nuclear issue will be settled by diplomatic means.

We are far away from the possibility of seriously discussing the issue of resorting to force, the ambassador said.

A recent statement by the Iranian authorities that Iran has joined the club of states that possess nuclear technologies does not promote a settlement, he said.

We sincerely believe that Iran would like to acquire nuclear weapons, and that is why they are attempting to carry out experiments in the enrichment area, by doing so contradicting agreements with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the ambassador said.

Should Tehran stop this research, then one could say that it had taken the path of development, which, in particular, presupposes work on Moscow's proposal to enrich Iranian uranium on Russian territory.

We are still optimistic and hope that Iran will do its best to help reach a settlement, Brenton said.
