Iran threatens to pull out of IAEA

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad threatened Monday to pull his country out of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The U.N. nuclear watchdog agency has accused Iran of refusing to answer questions about its nuclear program. The United States and other countries fear Iran may be pursuing nuclear weapons instead of nuclear power.

Ahmadinejad told reporters that Iran has been open and transparent about his activities, the Islamic Republic News Agency said. He claimed that Iran has mastered nuclear technology and can apply its knowledge in a variety of fields.

The International Atomic Energy Agency should act fairly and provide nations with a report on what they have given us after 30 years of membership in the agency, he said. If a country joins an institution and gains nothing from it except that the will of big powers is imposed on it, shouldn't that nation question membership in the institution?

Meanwhile, Itar-Tass cited a Russian military source who said that country is totally opposed to Iran becoming a nuclear power.

The source said that while the Kremlin may differ from the United States on how to achieve the goal of a non-nuclear Iran, the Russian government is for achieving that goal.
