IPTV Users Top 1.5mn

SHENZHEN, Nov 05, 2008 (SinoCast via COMTEX) --
China saw 950,000 new IPTV subscribers in the first nine months of 2008, pushing the total user base to 1.51 million by the end of the third quarter, according to latest statistics released by China Telecom.

China Telecom kicked off IPTV trial service in 2005 in some big cities and provinces such as Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong, and Shaanxi, providing users with services like video on demand, live broadcasting, playback, information browsing, and games. However, not until early this year the service had been growing slowly due to political and technical restrictions.

In Shanghai, the number of IPTV users hit 660,000 by the third quarter, in a stark contrast to 220,000 in early 2008. China Telecom recorded 200,000 IPTV users in Jiangsu province.

Guangdong Telecom, the branch of China Telecom in Guangdong province, is brewing large scale marketing campaigns in the fourth quarter to attract more IPTV users.
