InterDigital and Continuous Computing Address Bandwidth Crunch Through Intelligent Traffic Management at Network Edge
BARCELONA --(Business Wire)--
InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC) today announced its collaboration with
technology partner Continuous Computing (News - Alert)®, the global provider
of integrated platform solutions that address the mobile broadband
capacity challenge, on developing solutions for the intelligent
management of traffic at the network edge, considered to be the next
frontier in addressing the bandwidth crunch. For the 2011 Mobile World
Congress in Barcelona on February 14 - 17, 2011, the companies have
developed bandwidth management and machine-to-machine (M2M)
demonstrations that reflect synergies in offloading the wireless network
by intelligent traffic management.
The reduction of the bandwidth and processing load on the core network
becomes especially valuable with the expected growth of M2M traffic
where the signaling overhead related to setup, security handshaking and
teardown is significant relative to the amount of data transferred.
InterDigital (News - Alert)® is a key contributor to the standardization of
M2M technology and system architecture for standardized end-to-end
service capabilities with seamless integration of M2M devices with
cellular networks. By using M2M gateways, network operators can remotely
manage and control M2M devices and offer M2M network services to third
parties. This gateway function can be integrated on femtocells, home
gateways and even smartphones on the edge of the cellular network to
handle most bandwidth-heavy security and device management.
Continuous Computing's industry-leading Trillium femtocell software is
integrated with InterDigital's bandwidth management application and M2M
gateway for compelling demonstrations at the Mobile World Congress.
InterDigital is also leveraging Continuous Computing's deep expertise in
3G wireless and femtocells by engaging Trillium Professional Services
for design, development, integration and testing of InterDigital
bandwidth management and M2M solutions with Trillium wireless
"InterDigital's holistic bandwidth technologies for solving the
bandwidth crunch re in perfect alignment with our roadmap of integrated
platform solutions for operators," said Manish Singh (News - Alert), Vice President of
product line management for Continuous Computing. "InterDigital's
innovations in spectrum optimization, cross-network connectivity and
mobility, and intelligent data delivery can directly benefit Continuous
Computing's customers and ultimately the entire wireless ecosystem."
"Continuous Computing's ability to deliver customizable solutions for
both wireless and packet processing made them a natural fit with
InterDigital's holistic approach to providing dynamic bandwidth
management solutions that span the entire network," said James J. Nolan
- Executive Vice President, Research and Development, InterDigital.
"With a singular focus on the telecom market and a complete product
portfolio of hardware, software and professional services, Continuous
Computing is uniquely qualified to provide the solutions that meet
InterDigital's needs from the core all the way to the network edge."
Other elements of InterDigital's suite of holistic bandwidth
technologies use configurable policy rules that opportunistically
leverage multiple networks to increase bandwidth supply and offload
Segregation of traffic flows across separate networks based on Quality
of Service needs and operator policy;
Flow mobility between network links based on changing network
Splitting and aggregation of individual flows across multiple network
links allowing bandwidth to be allocated flexibly based on application
