Inmates take over Afghan jail

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)A high-security prison in Afghanistan was taken over by inmates after an escape attempt.

The BBC says two female prison guards were taken hostage and four inmates were killed Sunday at Pul-e-Charkhi, a huge prison complex on the outskirts of Kabul. Afghan officials deny there have been any deaths.

The military was trying to regain control of the prison Sunday. Parts of the women's wing of the jail was on fire, with hundreds of prisoners barricaded inside.

The BBC said the trouble began in Block 2, which houses 1,300 inmates.

Prison guards are accused of helping seven Taliban suspects escape from the jail last week, the BBC said.
