India voices concern over violence in Sri Lanka+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)NEW DELHI, April 24_(Kyodo) _ India expressed deep concern Monday over the escalation of violence in the eastern part of Sri Lanka, which has brought the ceasefire between the government and rebel Tamil Tigers "under serious strain."

The Foreign Ministry in a statement urged all concerned parties to "scrupulously adhere to the letter and spirit of the Ceasefire Agreement" and make all efforts to begin dialogue.

It welcomed the stance of the Sri Lankan government, which has conveyed its policy and intentions to restore normalcy in the affected areas.

More than 50 members of the armed forces and police have been killed in April in bomb attacks blamed on the rebels. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam in turn have accused the military of reprisal attacks on civilians.
