IBM Fellow and Industry Leader, Gene Amdahl, leaves behind his Legacy

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Xbridge Systems mourns the passing of Gene Amdahl, co-founder. Dr. Amdahl died Tuesday, November 10, 2015 from complications of pneumonia at the age of 92.

Dr. Amdahl joined IBM in 1952 where he worked on the IBM 704, the IBM 709, and then the Stretch project, the basis for the IBM 7030. He left IBM in 1955, but returned in 1960 and became chief architect of the System/360 mainframe computer. Dr. Amdahl was named an IBM Fellow in 1965 and eventually headed the Advanced Computing Systems Laboratory in Menlo Park, CA. He left IBM again in 1970 to found Amdahl Corporation, which specialized in IBM mainframe-compatible computing products, funded with investments by Heiser Corporation and Fujitsu.

Raymond A. Williams, Jr. had the privilege and honor to work closely with Dr. Amdahl at IBM and at Amdahl Corporation. "Gene was a true friend, colleague, and technical leader. I am grateful to have had the pleasure to know and partner with him.Gene shaped the mainframe computer industry, and his technical influence will be greatly missed."

In 1996, Amdahl co-founded Commercial Data Servers to design and build a small scale 360 system.  Part of that development was a special set of software which became Xbridge Systems. Today this company is profitable and has a great market opportunity in mainframe computer cyber security.
