Hunter Pace raises money for FOTAS, area animal shelter

Jan 09, 2011 (Aiken Standard - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Friends Of The Animal Shelter continue their mission by raising awareness and reaching out to the community to adopt animals at the Aiken County Animal Shelter.

The charity held a hunter pace Saturday at Three Runs Plantation. The organization had a number of volunteers at the event site who generated awareness for the challenges the Aiken County Animal Shelter is facing and about the importance of spaying and neutering pets.

The FOTAS Hunter Pace had a strong turnout, and the riders were enthusiastic and altruistic.

"We have quite a crowd," said Mary Lou Welch with FOTAS. "The trails at Three Runs Plantation are beautiful. Everyone raves about the Three Runs Clubhouse, Wayne Raiford and his staff." The hunter pace featured four flights including a first flight, hill toppers, walk/trot and fastest time.

"The first flight had 12 really nice jumps," said Welch. "The hunter pace had something to offer riders of all levels." The event also featured a drawing and lunch. Why Worry Hounds played an integral role in the event, said Welch.

Lisa Doker rode side saddle and participated in the Hilltopper division. She rode her 6-year-old horse Flying Dutchman.

"I came out here to support FOTAS, and to raise money for the homeless animals," said Doker. "It's for a wonderful charitable cause." Martha Jennings, who hunts with Why Worry Hounds on a weekly basis, also participated in the FOTAS Hunter Pace. She brought two horses to the event, and both are field hunters.

"It's for a good cause," said Jennings. "We all have our favorite charities. The horse I'll be riding I hunt every week with Why Worry. She's a Draft cross. The other is a Selle Francais. They're both seasoned field hunters and great mares." For more information about FOTAS, visit www.fotasaiken.org.
