Hungary's socialists retain power in election+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)BUDAPEST, April 24_(Kyodo) _ Hungary's Socialist-led coalition has held onto power in Sunday's election, which means Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany's government will be the first post-Cold War government to retain power, according to early election results released by the election commission.

With 98 percent of votes counted, the coalition of the Socialist Party and the Alliance of Free Democrats captured 210 seats in the 386-seat National Assembly, compared with 164 seats for the center-right opposition Fidesz party.

Hungarians apparently sought stability as the Gyurcsany administration, launched a year and a half ago, has implemented measures to aid the poor in order to achieve a more equitable society.
