Hungary's Magyar Telekom expands 4G coverage to 73% of population, targets 93% by 2015 [IntelliNews - Weekly Reports]

(IntelliNews - Weekly Reports Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Hungary's incumbent telecommunication company Magyar Telekom has expanded the outdoor coverage of its 4G/LTE-based mobile Internet services from 54% to 73% of the country's population after the company started on October 19 using frequencies it bought in a recent tender, the company informed in a statement.

The telecom connected 450 4G base stations to the network, enabling data transfer speeds up to 150 Mbps.

Earlier than planned, Magyar Telekom will increase its outdoor 4G coverage to 80% in the first months of next year and to 93% by the end of 2015.

Magyar Telekom currently has 250,000 clients of its 4G service. At the recent mobile frequencies tender, the company paid HUF 58.65bn for frequency packages and capitalised HUF 36.8bn for the present value of the future annual band fees related to the frequencies in Q4 2014.

Magyar Telekom was the first among mobile service providers in Hungary that launched commercial 4G/LTE-based mobile Internet services in January 2012.
