Howard wins 5 National Association of Counties achievement awardsJul 17, 2012 (Howard County Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Howard was one of only 19 counties nationwide to earn a "Best in Category" as part of the National Association of Counties annual achievement awards. The county earned its "Best in Category" designation for its role overseeing the rollout of the statewide broadband initiative, One-Maryland Inter-county Broadband Network. "By taking the initiative on behalf of the State of Maryland and understanding the needs of our local communities, we will deliver the connectivity and bandwidth needed to lead our region to an unprecedented platform for innovation," Ira Levy, director of the county's Department of Technology and Communications, said in a statement. The achievement awards, which recognize innovative county government programs, were presented July 15 during NACo's summer conference in Pittsburgh. County Executive Ken Ulman was on hand to accept the awards for Howard, which also included recognition for the Door to Health Care program, NotifyMeHoward, the Board to Promote Self-Sufficiency and the residential food scrap pilot program. "The ICBN project demonstrates that local government can not only be more efficient and responsive, but we can be innovative and collaborate with others to strengthen services and communities across Maryland," Ulman said in a statement.
