Hewlett-Packard Development Assigned Patent for Automatic Firewall Configuration


(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) By Targeted News Service ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 9 -- Hewlett-Packard Development, Houston, has been assigned a patent (8,555,372) developed by Phillip M. Walker, Fort Collins, Colo., Fred Charles Thomas, Fort Collins, Colo., and Greg J. Lipinski, Loveland, Colo., for an automatic firewall configuration.



The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "In one example a method is provided. The method includes (i) discovering, by a gateway router, a server in a local area network, wherein the gateway router discovers the server by sending a universal plug and play (UPnP) message identifying the gateway router as a gateway router with access configurable by the server; (ii) receiving, by the gateway router, a response from the server, wherein the response identifies the server as a server that desires to establish external access; (iii) determining, by the gateway router, whether the server is a trustworthy server, wherein determining comprises comparing information received by the server with a stored list of trustworthy servers; (iv) configuring, by the gateway router, a logical port to forward incoming connection requests to the server; and (v) forwarding, by the gateway router, incoming connection requests to the server."
