Hershey closes online sweet store

Jul 04, 2009 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) -- Hershey, a US confectionery company, has closed its online sweet store. The store has stopped taking orders effective July 31, 2009 and will officially close the store on August 28, 2009. The online store is reportedly offering 25% discount on all its products.

The website sells a collection of Hershey's products including chocolate-covered macadamia nuts. The online store offers packaging for occasions, such as graduations, birthdays and weddings.

According to media reports, Kirk Saville, the company's spokesman, said that Hershey is looking at other e-commerce options. Mr Saville declined to disclose information about the online store's revenue but mentioned that the company's online business model was not sustainable.

Mr Saville also said that 12 employees may lose their jobs because of the move and that the company will help them secure other jobs through the company's open job posting system. The employees who are to leave will receive severance benefits.
