Haverhill students return to school today after water pipe repair

HAVERHILL, Jan 06, 2009 (The Eagle-Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
School was back in session this morning at Consentino Middle and Silver Hill Horace Mann schools after an early release yesterday.

Students were dismissed at 1:30 p.m. on Monday so Water Department workers could repair a leaking underground pipe that supplies water to Consentino. Workers had to block the street in front of the school entrances to make the repairs.

School officials decided to close both schools, which are next to each other off Washington Street, for the convenience of parents who have children at both and for safety reasons -- the water pipe being repaired was next to a natural gas line.

Robert Ward, city water superintendent, said workers found a crack in the underground pipe and sealed it. The hole was filled in and gravel was used as a surface finish until hot top becomes available and the weather is clear enough to allow a new surface to be put on the road.

Consentino Assistant Principal Timothy Maroney said the early release went smoothly and that parents had been notified through the School Department's Honeywell call system, which allows school officials to make a mass phone call to homes and parents' cell or work phones in an emergency. He said the system relies on updated parent contact information and that parents should supply the School Department with their latest phone numbers.

"In an unexpected way, it was a good test of the Honeywell system," Maroney said.
