The Hartford Courant, Conn., Java column: Urban League Dinner A Smash, Drawing Nearly 700 Celebrants

(Hartford Courant, The (CT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Nov. 8--A couple of headliners at the 44th annual Urban League of Greater Hartford Equal Opportunity Dinner -- U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman and one of the award winners, former Hartford mayor and state treasurer Francisco Borges -- were expected no-shows Thursday at La Renaissance in East Windsor. But the event was still the area's biggest, with nearly 700 people celebrating the league's accomplishments at La Renaissance in East Windsor.

"Joe's staff called us today and said he wouldn't be here," said league president Jim Willingham, alluding to the senator's more pressing need to be in Washington as his political future as a Democrat is debated. "And Frank is out of the country and can't be here but his sister, Francesca Borges Gordon, will be accepting it on his behalf."

Borges, now managing partner and chairman of Landmark Partners; David Waren, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League's Connecticut office; and Lloyd Trotter, former president of General Electric's industrial division and now managing partner of GenNx360, were presented the league's community service awards. Program achievement awards were presented to Amber Mills and Chadrick Campbell ??????while UPS received the league's Community Business Award.

Much of the pre-dinner talk focused on the election of Barack Obama as president, with both Willingham and Trotter agreeing they never thought they would live to see an African-American president.

"We keep telling kids you can be anything you want to be but we know that is not always true," said Willingham. "But this proved that it is."
