Hard work paying off for New Waverly senior

Jan 11, 2009 (The Huntsville Item - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
New Waverly senior Sir. Horace Saulsberry has shown a wide variety of skills through playing sports at New Waverly High School. It has taken plenty of hard work and hours, but he has seen it pay off and has been quite successful, earning honors in football and basketball.

But Saulsberry's accolades aren't limited just to sports. He has also learned to excel in the classroom as well.

Recently, Saulsberry was awarded the United States Achievement Academy's math award -- New Waverly's only USAA selectee.

"It's a real big honor for me," Saulsberry said, "to be the only one at New Waverly to receive this award."

He was first brought to the academy's attention after Saulsberry was nominated by his Pre-calculus teacher, Ricky Cole.

"It was pretty nice to have a one of my teachers recommend me," Saulsberry said. " It means a lot that the teachers think a lot about me. I felt honored."

Saulsberry was then informed by the USAA that he was selected as an honoree. He was also asked for a picture and a list of school activities that he participated in.

In December, Saulsberry received the USAA yearbook and was surprised to see that he had a whole page about him, including his picture and some information about all that he had achieved in high school.

"They sent me a letter last year," Saulsberry said. "After we sent the stuff in, I didn't think much about it. But then they sent the book in. I was real surprised to see that I had my own page."

While Saulsberry was honored to be the lone New Waverly recipient, he was also proud of the fact that it was in math, a subject that he has taken quite well to.

"While it is one of my favorite subjects, it wasn't always easy," Saulsberry said. "Well, at first it was easy, but then I started getting into Pre-Calculus.

"I like math a lot. It's pretty cool"
With graduation on the horizon for Saulsberry, he sees earning this national honor as beneficial in helping to get into college.

"It's a big honor and it'll look really good on my resume," Saulsberry said.
"It's very important. It will add a little something for me, so that colleges can see that I don't just play sports but that I'm also committed to my studies. It'll make it that much easier for me to get into college."

While succeeding in math may help Saulsberry find the right college, he isn't wanting to give up on sports so soon.

"Playing football and basketball is something I love to do and I want to continue as long as I can," Saulsberry added.

There are a couple of opportunities already out there for Saulsberry, so that he can keep on playing football.

"I've got Rice and Eastern New Mexico looking at me. We'll just have to see how it pans out," Saulsberry said. "But I know if I can get into either of those colleges, it's because of my teachers. They really help out."
