Group to put on Thanksgiving spreadNov 08, 2009 (Jackson County Floridan - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Residents who can't afford to spread a Thanksgiving day table, or who don't have someone with whom to share the holiday meal do have an alternative. A free Thanksgiving Day dinner will be held in the Grocery Outlet parking lot this year. The meal will be sufficient for up to 200 people, and will be served from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. It includes turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans,rolls, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and a beverage. An outreach of the New Life Family Church of Marianna, the meal is part of the church's larger King's Table program. Through it, and Trumpeter's Song Ministries, the church feeds people all year long. According to Lori Gregg, an organizer, volunteers cook and deliver hot meals for 100 seniors and shut-ins across Jackson County every Saturday. Additionally, it provides 200 bags of non-perishables and other uncooked food each month; two bags each week for 24 of those served on the Saturday routes. Gregg said the weekly effort started after last year's Thanksgiving Day meal. She acknowledged it's a challenge for a church of about 50 members to support. It costs them about $650 a month to provide the weekly food bags. Outside monetary donations are accepted and volunteers are needed and welcome, she said.
