GRDA updates plans for dam breach

PRYOR, Feb 14, 2012 (The Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Mayes County Emergency Operations plan has been updated to include emergency access plans drawn up by the Grand River Dam Authority. Mayes County Emergency Management Director Johnny Janzen told Mayes County Commissioners about the update Monday.

The updated plan includes maps of possible flood areas, how long it would take for areas to flood around the dams and action plans in the case of an emergency.

Janzen said this allows his agency to make more accurate preparations for evacuating people in areas that could flood in the event of a dam breach.

Additionally, the commissioners approved Steven Heinz, Salina, as a new volunteer for Mayes County Emergency Manage-ment.

In other business, the commission: --Approved a bid from Kirby Smith for a new chipper/spreader for District 3 for a total of $156,324 with four add-ons.

--Bids for a local IT/phone vendor were tabled until the next meeting. Bids were taken from Ages Computer, at $69 an hour, Rush Communications, at $75 an hour, and Dees Communications, at $70 an hour.

--Approved Kellogg Engineering as the engineering firm for an STP project on True Road.

--Tabled a resolution for priority road projects. The commissioners said they wanted a chance to decide which road from each district needed the most work to be added to the list.

--Denied a utility crossing request in Salina that would run to cement plant road and Snowdale. Commis- sioner Darrell Yoder said he had problems before with water lines going in the ditches and crossing major areas and denied the request.

--The Town of Langley and Langley Fire Department appointed new requisitioning officers and receiving officers. Officers include Paige Long and Edgar Prine for requisitioning and Chadiwick Chew and William Long for receiving.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Mayes County Commissioners will be at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 20 at the Mayes County Courthouse.
