'Google authorised to offer voice services in Spain'

(DMeurope Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)
Spanish telecommunications regulator CMT has authorised Google to
launch its GrandCentral voicemail service, following an August 2008
consultation by the internet company. Google also sought information on
the possibility of offering outbound services and on the use of Madrid
geographic numbers for access. The outbound function would allow
voicemail users to make international calls over the internet, using a
service offered by GrandCentral, acquired by Google in 2007. CMT ruled
that Google could do so by registering as a fixed telephony service
provider, reseller, or "nomadic" voice service provider. The use of

geographic numbers "could be possible by numbering voicemail equipment,
but not users, and in reasonable volumes, avoiding that each user has a
different geographic number".
