Gist of U.N. Security Council statement on Iran's nuclear program+


(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)NEW YORK, March 29_(Kyodo) _ The following is the gist of a presidential statement adopted by the U.N. Security Council on Iran's nuclear program on Wednesday:

The Security Council:

-- reaffirms its commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and recalls the right of states party to develop research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without discrimination.

-- calls on Iran to re-establish full and sustained suspension of all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, including research and development, to be verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

-- requests in 30 days a report from the IAEA director general on the process of Iranian compliance with the steps required by the IAEA Board of Governors, to the IAEA board and to the Security Council.

-- expresses the conviction that such suspension and full, verified Iranian compliance with the requirements set out by the IAEA board would contribute to a diplomatic, negotiated solution that guarantees Iran's nuclear program is for exclusively peaceful purposes.
