GDOL's Information Technology Division Wins Second Consecutive Technology Innovations Showcase Award

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ATLANTA, Sept. 18 -- The Georgia Department of Labor issued the following news release: The Georgia Department of Labor's (GDOL) Information Technology Division has won the Georgia Technology Authority's (GTA) Technology Innovations Showcase Award for the second straight year. The department won for improving state government operations.

The award was presented to the GDOL today at the Georgia Digital Government Summit in Atlanta. The department was recognized for its implementation of the Quick Wage System (QWS) for Unemployment Insurance Tax, a technology that allows for automated input of employee wage data without manually keying in the information.

"The Georgia Department of Labor has won this award two years in a row with excellent leadership from our Chief Information Officer Jeff May," said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. "It's gratifying to receive recognition for our ongoing efforts to modernize and improve the use of technology to better serve the public and reduce the costs of administering Georgia's unemployment insurance program." May said, "I'm extremely proud of our IT staff who have worked so diligently to implement the Quick Wage System, especially after our recognition last year for the implementation of the Electronic Check Deposit and the State Information Data Exchanges (SIDES) E-Response Systems. These new systems are a win-win for our customers, the taxpayers, and the GDOL." GDOL requires more than 209,000 Georgia employers to submit quarterly wage reports, DOL-4, Part1, to report wages that are paid to employees. The department retains wage data for determining unemployment insurance benefits.

QWS uses an optical scanning technology called "roping." It allows the automated input of data from forms that can be processed using templates. The program allows the department to scan wage documents. Prior to the implementation of QWS, the department scanned single-page wage reports and keyed in all other multiple-page documents from the paper form. QWS saves the taxpayers money, improves efficiency, and allows the department to use personnel in remote areas of the state to process wage reports.
