GCCC phonathon raises more than $77,000

Oct 15, 2011 (The Garden City Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Callers and contributors raised more than $77,000 after the annual Garden City Community College Endowment Association Scholarship Phonathon.

The 32nd annual fundraiser, which started Oct. 3 and ended Thursday night, raised $77,532.

Representatives of the Endowment Association Board of Directors made calls on the concluding evening, backed up by GCCC Ambassador Scholars, to reach a nightly tally of $6,620 in hitting the $77,532 overall total.

A team of faculty and staff personnel, assisted by students from the GCCC cheerleading squad, raised $5,200 on Oct. 3. That was followed by $5,165 on Oct. 4, when students, faculty and staff from the GCCC Nursing and Allied Health Department handled the calling. On Oct. 5 the GCCC meats team and Student Government Association raised $3,835; and on Oct. 6, personnel from GCCC fine arts programs raised $4,595.

This past week, members of the GCCC rodeo team and Phi Theta Kappa academic honor society chapter raised $11,730 on Monday, followed Tuesday by cosmetology students and faculty, who collected $2,380. On Wednesday, community volunteers from the League of United Latin American Citizens, with students in the GCCC Hispanic American Leadership Organization chapter and personnel from the KANCO Program, ended the evening with $7,920. That total also included $2,635 raised by callers representing the GCCC Department of Public Safety.

The phonathon relied on Verizon Wireless as a major sponsor, with the company donating all phones and air time. An estimated 250 volunteers from the college and the community helped.

Other sponsors supporting the campaign included the Broncbuster Bookstore, Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce, Culligan of Southwest Kansas, Troy and Jessica Dirks, Garden Bowl, the GCCC Cosmetology Program, Golden Corral, Great Western Dining, Hard Rock Lanes, Las Margaritas, Little Ceasar's Pizza, Mitchell Theatres LLC, Papa John's Pizza, Pepsi, Pizza Hut, Sonic, Dr. Herbert Swender, The Car Wash, Ward's Garden Cafe, Wendy's and Wheat Lands Restaurant and Lounge.

The phonathon is one of two major fund-raising events staged each year by the association. The other is a scholarship auction that takes place each spring. Last year, the association was able to provide more than $447,000 in academic and technical scholarships to 1,207 GCCC students, as well as contribute $44,196 in grant funds to support academic programs.
