Gang attack on man probed

Jan 15, 2012 (Gulf Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- AN investigation has been launched into the attack on a Pakistani man by a group of youngsters.

Saifullah Khan was ambushed near Mo'men Mosque and beaten with a sharp object that caused severe bruises on his hands, chest and back.

The 25-year-old was taken to Salmaniya Medical Complex on Thursday night.

Interior Ministry officials yesterday confirmed investigations have been launched.

It is understood Mr Khan was returning home from an Internet shop when he was attacked, said a close friend.

"He went to a nearby Internet shop to call his family in Pakistan when a group of six youngsters approached him and asked if he was Pakistani, despite him wearing Shalwar Kameez (Pakistani dress)," said the friend, who wished to remain anonymous.

"When he said 'yes', they immediately covered his face with a piece of cloth and started beating him with a sharp object.

"He managed to escape from them and came to my house.

"Thank God they didn't follow him and we took him to the hospital.

"When he gained consciousness, he told us how he was attacked.

"He is too afraid to talk about it and says he is lucky to be alive." Mr Khan is said to be in stable condition but is still in a state of shock.

"He is still in a state of shock and trying to forget what happened," said his friend.

"We are still waiting for him to recover from the trauma and injuries he suffered and then ask him what he wants to do next." ___ (c)2012 the Gulf Daily News (Manama, Bahrain) Visit the Gulf Daily News (Manama, Bahrain) at www.gulf-daily-news.com Distributed by MCT Information Services
