Funambol's Open Source Portal to Deliver Wireless Data Synchronization Regardless of User Location or Platform

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Funambol, the mobile open source company, today announced the beta launch of its Sync4j Portal. The Personal Information Management (PIM) Portal allows mobile users to wirelessly synchronize address books and calendars between their Personal Computers (PCs) and nearly any mobile device without the installation of a server.

"Funambol's Sync4j Portal brings the advantages of open standards to enterprises, developers and carriers alike," said Fabrizio Capobianco, CEO, Funambol. "By using a PIM portal based on open standards, users gain an effective tool for managing their personal data and can update devices for free."
With Funambol's Sync4j Portal, users can synchronize their data anytime from anywhere with over the air (OTA) downloads. Furthermore, when upgrading to a new device or replacing a lost or stolen device, users can quickly recapture their data without a fee or unneeded aggravation.
The Sync4j Portal's distinct features include a smart merge function that eliminates the duplication of data. With Sync4j, contacts and appointments are automatically merged from Outlook to users' phones in order to effectively manage their information. In addition, the Sync4j Portal easily recovers data if accidentally lost or deleted. Because the Sync4j Portal maintains a free backup of the user's contacts and appointments, the data is always securely accessible and retrievable from any web browser. The Portal supports Blackberry, Outlook, Palm, iPod, Windows Mobile, and any SyncML enabled device.
Funambol's Sync4j open source mobile application server is the leading open source implementation of the OMA DS/DM (or SyncML) standard, boasting more than 19,000 downloads per month. OMA DS/DM is the open standard that drives data mobility by establishing a common language for communications between devices, applications and networks. In the U.S. alone, more than 80 percent of the cellular handsets shipped in 2005 will support this open standard.
