Francis Okello joins Barclays Africa's board [Business Daily (Kenya)]

(Business Daily (Kenya) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Barclays Bank of Kenya chairman Francis Okomo-Okello has been appointed non-executive director of Barclays Africa Group, the British lender's holding company on the continent.

Mr Okello's appointment to the South African-based board takes effect from Wednesday and is meant to incorporate directors from various markets where Barclays Africa operates.

"In line with our previously stated intention to appoint two additional board members to reflect the Pan-African nature of the group, it gives me great pleasure to welcome Francis and Alex (Darko) to our board," Barclays Africa chairman Wendy Lucas-Bull said in a statement.

"They bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise and we look forward to their contributions." Their appointment is a continuation of restructuring of UK-based Barclays Plc's operations in Africa.

In July last year the multinational integrated nine of its African subsidiaries, including Barclays Kenya, with South Africa's Absa Bank which it also controls.

The merged entities now report to the newly created Barclays Africa, which in turn reports to London-based Barclays Plc.

Previously, individual subsidiaries reported to London directly. The local unit is the largest Barclays subsidiary on the continent outside South Africa.
