Former First Lady Michelle Obama Calls on Businesses to Take a Stand on Social Issues at Spredfast Smart Social Summit

Former First Lady, activist and Smart Social powerhouse, Michelle Obama joined Spredfast, the leading independent social marketing software provider, in a moderated conversation at Spredfast's Smart Social Summit. Spredfast's Chief Customer Officer, Virginia Miracle, spoke with Mrs. Obama to a crowd of over 1200 global digital leaders and 300 students from the Austin community.

For the sixth annual Smart Social Summit, over 1200 of the smartest minds in social converged in Austin for a three-day conference to learn, connect and be inspired by their peers. Smart Social Summit is widely recognized as one of the top social media conferences, where Spredfast's community of the world's largest businesses, agencies, public figures and media companies come together in an intimate setting to chart the future of social media, solve practical problems and forge meaningful relationships.

The Obama administration was known for opening the doors of the White House to connect with real people. Mrs. Obama discussed how she used empathy and kindness as her guiding principles as First Lady and in her initiatives today. As First Lady, she invited diverse voices to the table to ignite richer conversation and to drive more meaningful change. Mrs. Obama encouraged leaders in te room to follow her example in the way they design products, engage in public discourse and build their businesses.

Today's customers expect businesses to lead change in society. Social media gives businesses, public figures and organizations unprecedented opportunity to reach diverse audiences. Mrs. Obama emphasized that businesses have a responsibility to speak up for their principles, and take a stand in pivotal moments. She said that when businesses have the opportunity to join public discourse, they have a moral obligation to use that voice for good.

For the 300 students in the audience, Mrs. Obama gave advice on how to build trust as future leaders. She conveyed the importance of leading with empathy, positivity, and consistency throughout their lives. She closed her remarks with a call to action for the audience: be kind, be open and be human.

"We're excited to see how our students will use Mrs. Obama's advice to build their bright future," said Dr. Colette Burnette, President of Huston-Tillotson University.

"Smart Social is more than just the name of this conference-it informs who we are and everything we do. Connect people, show value, and build trust. That's Smart Social," said Rod Favaron, Chief Executive Officer at Spredfast. "Former First Lady Michelle Obama embodies all three brilliantly."
