'Follow the Leader' Campaign Marks Five-Year Anniversary of the Montgomery County Green Business Certification Program

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 30 -- Montgomery County issued the following news release: "This December marks the five-year anniversary of the County's Green Business Certification Program. Launched in 2009 by the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection, in partnership with the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce and Montgomery College, the program recognizes voluntary efforts by businesses to protect, preserve and improve the environment.

In honor of the anniversary and as a special thank you to the nearly 60 Certified Green Businesses, the County has launched a "Follow the Leader" PSA marketing campaign.

The Ride-on PSA reads "Follow the Leader!" alongside the name and logo of a Certified Green Business. Each business will be individually promoted on a particular bus for at least 12 weeks. Some PSAs have been visible since September, but November will be the only month during which almost all the PSAs will be on the street at the same time.

"It's no accident that we chose the words appearing on the advertisement," said Gigi Godwin, president and CEO of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, a program partner as well as a Certified Green Business. "'Leader' is precisely how I would describe each of these triple-bottom line businesses. They represent the businesses of the future focused not only on profit, but the environment and society as a whole. They recognize that this approach is helping them to prosper in a changing marketplace." "Given the growth of the Program, we decided that it made sense to feature individual Certified Green Businesses on the buses - it's a benefit that they well deserve, and we're happy to promote their efforts," said Fariba Kassiri, acting director of the County's Department of Environmental Protection "The campaign has been so popular with Certified Green Businesses that one business, All Eco Design Center in Wheaton, created a contest on Facebook offering its customers a $500 gift certificate in exchange for a photo of the bus with its name and logo," Kassiri noted.

Businesses that have been certified under the County's Green Business Certification Program have demonstrated their commitment to environmental stewardship, conservation of energy and water, sustainable landscaping, carbon footprint reduction, and waste reduction and recycling.

The five-year anniversary also marks a series of enhancements that the Green Business Certification Program will roll out later this year, including an expanded program and a streamlined application.

A description of all the certified green businesses and what they have done to earn their certification is available on the County's website at http://mcgreenbiz.org/directory.
