Five killed in Kashmir violence

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Suspected militants have launched a series of grenade attacks in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir, killing at least four civilians, police said.

In the space of an hour on Thursday, at least four grenade attacks created panic in the summer capital of Srinagar, the BBC reported Friday.

Two civilians were killed, including a young girl, when a police post near the city's Dal Lake, a popular tourist attraction, was attacked.

A second grenade attack targeted a truck carrying Indian soldiers in another part of the city. Two civilians died, one of them a woman, and four people were wounded, including two soldiers, officials said.

A fifth person died when police opened fire on the suspected militants.

There were reportedly at least two other grenade attacks in other parts of the city, causing some injuries.

The separatist movement that began in 1989 has resulting in more than 60,000 deaths in Indian-administered Kashmir.
