Fiskkit Launches News Commenting Website

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Fiskkit today announced the release of its online discussion platform ahead of the first presidential debate. Fiskkit.com is designed to favor an online dialogue of facts, logic and civility and can quality-check all online news in real time.

The goal of Fiskkit is to elevate the discussion of news on the internet. Fiskkit offers users the ability to "fisk"—a blogging term for a line-by-line critique of a news or opinion piece—the presidential debates or any news article and share opinions on social media.

Readers can post any online news story to its site, and then comment on and tag any sentence in the story. This lets people discuss the details of an article and turns the discussion into structured data. Once enough readers have fisked the news article, they can see statistically-validated "Insights" that describe individual sentences, including: False, Unsupported, Insightful, or "Straw Man Argument."  Users must post under real naes via LinkedIn or Facebook to encourage civility, and there is a "Respect" button to empathize with a strong argument, even if it represents a different point of view.

"Content is being created at a much faster rate than anyone can check, and so much of it is poorly reasoned or just factually wrong. Fiskkit lets people insert their opinions directly into an article, and simultaneously helps check its quality. It acts like a cheat sheet for readers to find out what's valid or not in every article," said John Pettus, founder of Fiskkit.

Unlike other approaches to online discussion, Fiskkit is engineered to detect valid patterns in the feedback and give users new insights and capabilities for engaging with the content and each other. Fiskkit will soon release a paid version for organizations such as advocacy groups, brands and campaigns. The company is currently designing a next-generation "Troll Filter" to reduce trolling and harassment among users.
