Film to Raise Awareness About Legal Barriers to School Choice

A former Vatican ambassador and former mayor of Boston will be speaking at a free film screening of a new documentary film "Big Sacrifices, Big Dreams: Ending America's Bigoted Education Laws," which traces the ordeals of four families who struggle to send their children to religiously rooted schools.

The screening will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at the CSJ Center at Fontbonne Academy in Boston.

Speakers include Jim Stergios, executive director of the Pioneer Institute; Kathy Mears, superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Boston; and Raymond Flynn, former ambassador to the Vatican and former mayor of Boston. Following the film will be a panel discussion and an audience question and answers period.

This event is planned to coincide with the history-making celebration of National School Choice Week 2018, which will feature more than 32,000 school choice events across all 50 states.

"The Know-Nothing, or Blaine Amedments, prevent more than 100,000 families in Massachusetts cities with chronically underperforming schools from receiving scholarship vouchers or education tax credits that would grant them greater school choice," said Jamie Gass, Pioneer's director of the Center for School Reform. The Pioneer Institute, which produced the film, is hosting the event.

Fontbonne Academy is located at 930 Brook Rd. in Milton.
