Ericsson and Slovak Telekom conduct first intraband 300 Mbps over-the-air trial

(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 22 September 2014 Release date- 19092014 - Ericsson and Slovak Telekom demonstrate over-the-air LTE Carrier Aggregation with speeds up to 300 Mbps World's first over-the-air trial for intraband contiguous Carrier Aggregation in B7/2600 MHz 20+20 MHz in field environment intro Ericsson and Slovak Telekom extend successful long-term partnership Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and Slovak Telekom, a member of Deutsche Telekom Group, conducted successful 300 Mbps over-the-air field trials for intraband contiguous LTE Carrier Aggregation (CA), which falls under the new generation LTE-Advanced standards.

Carrier Aggregation enables network operators to make more efficient use of the frequency spectrum by combining two or more carriers into a single channel. The user terminal in this case receives data from two channels at the same time. Besides achieving higher speed for users, LTE-A CA contributes to more efficient use of spectrum.

The demo took place under real conditions at the Bratislava Magio Beach using 20 MHz and 20 MHz in the 2600 MHz band. Slovak Telekom is currently the only operator in Slovakia, which in terms of the available spectrum can reach speeds up to 300 Mbps downlink. Although networks with 300 Mbps speeds have been publicly tested, but in Bratislava it was the first time ever in the world that intra-band 300 Mbps was tested. Infrastructure for the demo was supplied by Ericsson and the terminal had prototype chip from Qualcomm.

Branimir Maric, Chief Technology and Information Officer, Slovak Telekom, says: 'Thanks to combination of frequency spectrum obtained in auction and rich experience in LTE technology we have decided to take this opportunity and demonstrate first test of its kind with speeds up to 300 Mbps in our LTE network. Slovak Telekom is very active in testing new technologies - as we proved several times, with HSPA+ 21 and 42 Mbps launches, HSPA+ 84 Mbps trial in Bratislava or LTE launch in 2600 MHz spectrum with speeds up to 150/50 Mbps. I believe that this LTE-A test with 300 Mbps download is strong showcase of our next development and our Technologies.' Ericsson and the Slovak operator's partnership stretches back 16 years. Ericsson is Slovak Telekom's sole supplier for the 2G and 3G Radio Access Network and Circuit Switched Core. Furthermore, Ericsson is delivering IMS and Managed Services for the fixed network. And in 2013, nationwide LTE was added to the scope of their successful, longstanding partnership.

Marian Bezak, Head of Ericsson Slovakia, says: 'Ericsson is the leader of developing and implementing Carrier Aggregation technology around the world. Trial in Slovakia is unique due to the fact of using intra-band Carrier Aggregation. Introducing carrier aggregation solution will support Slovak Telekom in continuing to stay the Technology Leader in the Slovak market and providing advanced user experience to the subscribers.' Slovak Telekom brand offers a complex portfolio of voice and data services provided via fixed and mobile networks. It also consistently introduces innovative solutions and cutting-edge technological trends to the market. In the field of mobile communication, it provides internet connectivity via several different technologies for high-speed data transmission - GPRS/EDGE, Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi), UMTS FDD/HSDPA/HSUPA, FLASH-OFDM and LTE.
