Electronic waste management project launched in Kazakhstan [Times of Central Asia]


(Times of Central Asia Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ASTANA (TCA) — The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Water Resources of Kazakhstan in cooperation with the UN Development Program and Samsung Electronics company has launched an electronic waste management project in Kazakhstan, Minister of Environmental Protection and Water Resources Nurlan Kapparov said on Monday.



"The project of electronic waste management promoted by the UNDP with the financial support of Samsung Electronics in Kazakhstan and Central Asia is an example of public-private partnership aimed at promotion of state priorities and fulfillment of the tasks set by the President [of Kazakhstan]," the minister said according to the strategy2050.kz website (www.strategy2050.kz). In Kapparov's words, the project aims at improvement of the system of electronic waste management, improvement of efficiency of the services for the collection, transportation, utilization, and disposal of this type of waste."It is planned to install eco-boxes for collection of out-of-order cell phones in the points of sale of cell phones. Besides, it is planned to raise public awareness about the harm caused by electronic waste and ways of its utilization," the minister said.According to the Environmental Protection Ministry, about three million personal computers were imported to Kazakhstan over the period from 2000 through 2010, and 1.5 million of them have already become electronic waste.
