EDITORIAL: Recyclers: County's schools again collecting old phone books

Mar 20, 2010 (Cumberland Times News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- If you have a surplus of outdated or unwanted telephone books, here's a place you can send them: Allegany County's public schools will be collecting phone books for their annual recycling campaign, a project that will provide financial rewards and good lessons for the students who are involved.

Last year, more than 19,000 phone books were collected, which meant that participating schools received $900 for use in purchasing "green" items.

This year's goal is to collect 13 tons of phone books for recycling.

Sponsors of the phone book drive will give $5 for each 100 books collected, and the school that gathers the most books will receive an additional $250.

The campaign is being held in conjunction with Earth Day on April 22.

Recycling is always a good idea, particularly in the case of old phone books. They are 100 percent recyclable and are used primarily to make new phone books. They also are recycled into building materials and other products that are used in the home.

This program will be give Allegany County's middle and high school students some positive reinforcement along those lines.

They also will receive service-learning hours that will go toward their graduation requirements.
