Edgeware IPTV technology delivers the Olympics, timeshifted, for TeliaSonera

Whatever we want, whenever we want – we’ve all heard it, but now we have seen it!

Edgeware technology was used when TeliaSonera (News - Alert) offered the Olympic Games time shifted in their world class IPTV deployment

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – September 10, 2008 – Edgeware today announced that TeliaSonera in Sweden made the Olympic Games available to all their IPTV (News - Alert) customers to watch whenever they preferred, using Edgeware’s Orbit 2x server system.

Nordic operator TeliaSonera is a highly successful pioneer in IPTV and today counts a total of more than 400k IPTV subscribers. Over the last year TeliaSonera has deployed a very modern IPTV platform based on the Edgeware Orbit 2x on demand servers, with unrivalled scalability and cost efficiency as well as inherent support for VoD, nPVR and time shifted TV services. For the Summer Olympics in Beijing, TeliaSonera in Sweden started to offer SVT Play directly to their customers’ TV screens. This means that Telia’s TV customers did not need to loose sleep during the Olympics in Beijing, but were able to watch the broadcasts from the Summer Games whenever they wanted.

"It is becoming more and more evident that people want to control their own media consumption and watch TV when it suits them. We’ve seen a significant upswing in on demand services during the past year, and there are many indications that the trend will continue. This makes it even more exciting that we were able to offer our customers the flexibility of watching the Olympic Games from Beijing when it fits their schedule." says Erik Hallberg, head of Broadband Services at TeliaSonera in Sweden

When offering time shifted TV services, the live TV channels are recorded directly on all the Orbit 2x servers in the deployment and made available for viewing within 1 second, with full interactivity such as pause, rewind and start-over.

“We’re proud to support Telia in adding market leading services to their IPTV offering. The Orbit 2x servers are uniquely well suited for time shifted services where live TV channels are provided for the subscribers to be viewed instantaneously or at a later time.”
says Mikael Samuelsson, VP Sales at Edgeware in Sweden
