DRAMA: Jack back on the box

(Daily Record Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)NEW! Jack Davenport swapped Caribbean beaches for Australia when he was offered the role of a naval lieutenant in ITV1's latest swashbuckling drama.

The 32-year-old actor had just spent a year abroad making the Hollywood blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean when he was picked to play Ralph Clarke in the true story of 18th century convict Mary Bryant - who was shipped to New South Wales to help build one of Australia's first colonies.

"It meant three-and-a-half months filming in Australia, " recalls Jack, who first found fame in the BBC2 drama This Life. "It sounds great but having spent so much time filming abroad, I was ready to come home by the end of it.

"The fact that it is a true story really appealed tome. They had absolutely no idea what they were letting themselves in for. Captain Cook was the only one who had ever been there and they didn't have one person on board who could farmor build homes.

"They just wanted to empty the jails in Britain - and shipping them off to the other side of the world was the way to do it. It was pretty brutal, especially for the women."

Jack stars alongside Romola Garai, who plays Mary and Sam Neill, who stars as the first governor of New South Wales.

"Romola is fantastic," says Jack, who lives with his actress wife Michelle Gomez in London. "It was a big ask but she handled it brilliantly."
