Destin Library looking for guitar heroes
Dec 27, 2008 (Destin Log - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
If you want to rock, Destin Library is the place to be next Tuesday.
The library will register up to 25 11 to 17 years olds to compete in the popular computer game Guitar Hero World Tour which allows players to test their musical skills on game controllers designed like musical instruments. Between competition bouts, the game will be open to players who didn't sign up in advance, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Library Director Jurate Burns told The Log the idea came from her administrative assistant, Tina Kaple.
"Jurate wanted to bring some kids into the library over the holidays, and asked what I thought would bring them in," Kaple said. "I said Guitar Hero -- we play it at home."
In World Tour, players control their on-screen avatars with controllers including guitars, drums or microphones. The game comes with 86 different songs from the Eagles, Van Halen, Michael Jackson and other stars. Players can use a single instrument, a combination of instruments or play as part of a band.
Kaple said her two children would be competing: Kayla, 12, as part of the Junior Mints band and Kyle playing solo on guitar.
Kaple said this week that the registration deadline was Tuesday, Dec. 23, but the library would allow later registrations if the categories -- expert guitar, medium guitar, expert drums, medium drums and band -- weren't filled.
