DARPA Opens New Headquarters in Arlington

May 25, 2012 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- Arlington, Va. - Congressman Jim Moran, Northern Virginia Democrat, spoke at today's opening of the new Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) headquarters in Ballston, applauding the agency for its commitment to innovation and technology and contributions to the Northern Virginia economy.

"Arlington has been and will remain home to DARPA," said Rep. Moran. "From the development of the Internet to unmanned aerial vehicles, DARPA employs some of the best and brightest our nation has to offer. Today these talented scientists are at the forefront of cybersecurity research, the future of information technology." DARPA manages an annual budget of $2.8 billion. The agency's small size allows it to remain flexible, shifting priorities and research as needed. In recent years, DARPA has expanded into cyber research, receiving a $208 million budget in fiscal year 2012. The new facility will house more than 1,200 DARPA employees and contractors.

"For a tiny agency, DARPA makes enormous contributions to our nation's defense and provides a major economic boost to the region," Moran continued. "Through innovative R&D in partnership with contractors and private companies, DARPA accounts for some 17,000 jobs in Northern Virginia. Construction of the new headquarters alone created 10,000 jobs." BRAC 2005 recommended relocation of DARPA outside of Northern Virginia. Congressman Moran, former Senator John Warner, Senator Mark Warner and former Governor Tim Kaine worked with DARPA and DOD officials to keep the new headquarters and thousands of jobs in Arlington.

DARPA broke ground on the new headquarters in October 2009, relocating to Ballston from the Virginia Square neighborhood. The new, green building was awarded several Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) distinctions for environmentally efficient building design, construction, and operation.
