Cumulus Networks Recognized as a Visionary in Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data Center Networking

Cumulus Networks, the leader in bringing web-scale networking to enterprise cloud, today announced Gartner (News - Alert) has positioned it in the Visionaries quadrant of the July 2017 Gartner Quadrant for Data Center Networking. Cumulus Networks was one of thirteen vendors evaluated for the 2017 report and was assessed for its completeness of vision and ability to execute.

With their open networking platform Cumulus Linux, Cumulus Networks helps organizations of all sizes adopt web-scale technologies to reach the speed and agility of web-scale giants. According to 2016 Gartner research, by 2020, 40% of global enterprise CIOs will have initiated a corporate web-scale IT initiative, which is a significant increase from today's fewer than 5%.1

Gartner defines a Visionary company as having demonstrated an ability to increase the features in its offering to provide a unique and differentiated approach to the market. A Visionary has innovated in one or more of the key areas of data center infrastructure, such as management (including virtualization), security (including policy enforcement), SDN and operational efficiency, as well as cost reductions.2

"We believe our position in the Visionaries quadrant this year, our first-ever placement in the Gartner Magic Quadrant, and market momentum for an open, disaggregated solution is validation of our founding belief that companies need to embrace web-scale architectures," said Josh Leslie, CEO of Cumulus Networks. "While we now have more than 750 customers running Cumulus Linux, our work has only just begun - we're going to continue creating new, innovative solutions like NetQ that build upon our foundation, Cumulus Linux, to give more businesses the tools they need to design, build and operate their infrastructure the web-scale networking way."

"There is a growing willingness to move away from proprietary solutions. Our end-user survey (n = 83) indicated that 42% of clients consider open standards and multivendor interoperability support a mandatory requirement, 34% consider it very important, and 20% consider it somewhat important, so openness is a relevant buying criterion for 96% of the end users... Disaggregation of hardware and software can be seen as a first step toward more vendor independence. Interest and adoption of white-/brite-box switching has increased significantly within hyperscale data centers over the past several quarters, and we expect it to reach 22% of the total data center Ethernet switch market by 2020… As a consequence, we have seen enterprise adoption of brite box (the most successful delivery model in this mrket segment) grow, and we estimate about 1,000 paying enterprise customers as of March 2017. ." This Gartner recognition comes amidst rapid momentum for Cumulus Networks over the past year. The company saw more than 200%+ bookings growth fueled by high profile customer wins, including more than one-third of the Fortune 50. Cumulus Networks has achieved several milestones such as:

  • Expanded the product portfolio: Through technical innovations like NetQ, the first product offering outside of the core OS, Cumulus Networks is helping operators proactively manage network infrastructure and bring web-scale efficiencies to network operations, making NetDevOps a reality.
  • Welcomed Free Range Routing project to The Linux Foundation (News - Alert): Helped introduce Free Range Routing, a routing protocol stack designed to make engineers' lives easier and help bring reliability and economics of web-scale to organizations of all sizes.
  • Supported the Open19 initiative: The company announced support for Open19, an initiative to develop a new standard for data center infrastructure, making it easier for companies of all sizes to make the transition to web-scale.
  • Introduced Cumulus Express: Cumulus Express streamlines and simplifies the first step in the process for organizations looking to adopt web-scale principles.
  • Demonstrated support for modular platforms with Facebook (News - Alert) Backpack: Announced Facebook's latest open hardware platform, Backpack, runs Cumulus Linux network OS to unlock web-scale networking for enterprises and make it simple for data center operators to take advantage of the first open ecosystem chassis.
  • More than 750 high-profile customer wins: New customers include NASA, Verizon (News - Alert), Athena Health, and Outbrain. Cumulus Networks now has over 750 customers, including 32% of the Fortune 50.

"Cumulus Networks had the foresight to know that the world was ready for an open network OS, unlike other well known competitors who are still struggling to catch up. The level of integration with third party systems is phenomenal because it's just Linux. Follow the Rocket Turtle, take the red pill." Joshua Brown, Healthcare Realty Trust Inc.
