CST launches 3G technical pilot in Sao Tome and Principe
(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 14 February 2012
Release date- 09022012 - CST, a PT subsidiary in Sao Tome and Principe, initiated a technical pilot phase of the third-generation mobile network.
The start of the pilot phase was marked by a demonstration session and a video call between government and regional officials located in each of the two islands (Sao Tome and Principe islands).
The test period will last approximately six weeks, followed by the commercial launch of the 3G service, planned for March of this year. Data will then be collected to assess and improve network quality, thus affording greater customer satisfaction.
During the experimental phase, 3G coverage will reach approximately 70% of the population of Sao Tome Island, currently covering already 74% of the island of Principe.
This pilot project represents a first step of several throughout 2012 that will contribute to the development of telecommunications in the archipelago, bringing it to the level of countries more advanced in terms of infrastructure, services and rates of penetration and use. In the case of a WCDMA network, a more advanced version of UMTS, speeds up to 14 Mbps in full mobility can be tested.
CST believes that mobile broadband and internet via mobile phone will be massively adopted when the fiber-optic submarine cable enters into operation, which would allow higher throughput and higher consumption at more affordable prices.
