Crestwood board OKs putting surplus items for sale on Web

Oct 18, 2009 (The Times-Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Crestwood officials are hoping to use the school district's Web site to get rid of surplus equipment, generating extra money.

On Thursday, the board authorized district administrators to look into advertising the unneeded items on www.csdcomets.org.

"Any money that can come in can buy a book, can buy Internet time," Superintendent Dave McLaughlin-Smith said. "It's a positive." Items like a electric meat cutter or used lawn mower would be advertised "as is" and sold to the highest bidder, McLaughlin-Smith said. Proceeds from the sale of the items would go into the district's general fund.

"Instead of junking it, just putting it into the metal recycling container, maybe someone could take it and use it," he said.

Typically, school districts hold auctions every few years or discard items they no longer need. Presenting the items on the Web site would be more efficient and expedite the process, McLaughlin-Smith said.

McLaughlin-Smith said he is unaware of any other district advertising excess equipment online. He said he would work with district solicitor Jack Dean to ensure the procedure is legally sound before any items are advertised.

The board would approve items to go on the list before they are advertised.
