Courts to launch online payment service

May 08, 2010 (Statesville Record and Landmark - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The N.C. Administrative Office of the Courts is launching a new online payment service for some traffic citations.

The new system, called payNCticket, allows people to make online payments via credit or debit card for most waivable traffic citations.

Waivable offenses are those for which a court appearance is not required.

Iredell County Clerk of Court Rena Turner said this will not only provide a more convenient payment option for citizens, it will reduce the workload of cashiers and clerks at courthouses around the state.

"This just adds to the services available to citizens through our office," Turner said. "We look forward to helping make this process simpler and easier for anyone who uses this service." Overall, North Carolina courts handle the payment of more than 500,000 waivable offense citations per year. In fiscal year 2008-09, more than 644,000 of these citations were paid in the state, 10,953 in Iredell County alone.

Prior to payNCticket, violators had to pay fines and related court costs at the courthouse or by mail.

Turner said this will allow for quicker disposition of cases due to the automatic updates of case records. She said it will reduce courthouse traffic and decrease wait times for those people still wanting to pay in person.

"As the first online payment system available to Iredell County, payNCticket.org will automate payment processes and improve overall courthouse procedures," said Judge John W. Smith, NCAOC director. "PayNCticket.org is a major step toward increasing the state's court system's online service capacities and meeting the technological needs of its citizens." PayNCticket is being rolled out county-by-county throughout the state. All counties are expected to be using the system by late summer.

Payments made using this online system will be processed by NIC, a company that provides eGovernment services.
