County's criminal computer system in disrepair [Odessa American, Texas :: ](Odessa American (TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 29--Since Sunday, Precinct 3 Commissioner Dale Childers' worst fears came true; everyone from criminal clerks to sheriff's deputies were without a computer system to input and access criminal information. As county officials anticipate the long-awaited transition to Odyssey software for criminal cases from the legacy AbleTerm program, Childers said he hoped the AbleTerm server wouldn't give out. AbleTerm is software the district and county clerks' offices have used for criminal cases, but which has long since gone out of regular use as newer technologies have become available. Odyssey, one of those newer technologies, has been an ongoing project in the county for the past 7 years and isn't expected to be fully implemented until 2016. "It's on an ancient server, and we've been scared about this for a long time," Childers said. "Something happened to it and it quit working, so they replaced a lot of parts on the server." Childers said they are working to determine whether Tyler Technologies or the county will pay for the repairs, but acknowledged it could cost the county up to $70,000. The system could be back up and running as soon as today, Childers said.
