County load limits likely coming next week
Feb 14, 2012 (American News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Spring load limits will likely be enacted in Brown County next week, county commissioners decided during their meeting this morning.
Jan Weismantel, highway superintendent, asked commissioners about the prospect of automatically imposing mandatory limits on county roads annually from Feb. 15 to April 30. Aberdeen officials are considering such restrictions on city streets. Commissioners, though, rejected that idea because they know farmers and others need to haul a variety of heavy loads as spring approaches.
Six-ton-per-axle limits are put in place to protect loads during the spring thaw.
Commissioners said they have had phone calls from people who wonder when the restrictions be enacted. They took no formal action, but are contemplating next week unless there is a cold streak between now and then.
"Get off the phone, and get your stuff hauled," Commissioner Tom Fischbach joked.
Weismantel said she wants to get the limits in place as soon as possible because the department can't afford to pay to fix damage caused by heavy loads.
State Department of Transportation officials are also considering enacting load limits earlier than usual because of the mild winter. They have not set a date, but have warned farmers and others to haul heavy loads as soon as possible.
