CONCERTED EFFORTS

Jan 01, 2009 (The Gazette - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
NINE INCH NAILS 1.
Nov. 20, U.S. Cellular Center, Cedar
Rapids
In a recent blog post, Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor wrote that his band's 2008 tour was "FOR SURE the best show of the year and any bulls--- end-ofthe-year poll you may read that says otherwise simply has it wrong." Reznor can't be accused of bragging because he's right. Nine Inch Nails' concert easily was the best of the year in Eastern Iowa. Reznor is in the midst of a creative resurgence capped off by this year's powerfully raw "The Slip." The album's new songs gave the show a sense of urgency and timeliness most washed-up '90s acts can't match.

Nine Inch Nails powered through most of its biggest hits, including "Closer," "Terrible Lie" and "Head Like a Hole," while a cutting-edge light show created a captivating visual backdrop. Witnessing Nine Inch Nails play "March of the Pigs," with its industrial-rock noise intercut by pretty piano interludes, was my most exhilarating concert moment of the year.

Chuck Berry, still going strong at 82, made it obvious where rock 'n' roll gets its ferocity, recklessness and humor. Berry has more energy than most men half his age, and his ramshackle performance of classic songs like "Johnny B. Goode" and

"Roll Over Beethoven" showed he still knows how to throw a party.
Pop-rock group Rooney opened the show, giving extra incentive for younger music fans to attend. I wasn't a big fan of Rooney before the concert, but the group won me over with its tightly wound power pop and breezy southern California style.
