COMTek: Finetuning of BPL Technology in Manassas Complete, Legitimate Ham Radio Operator Concerns Now Addressed

MANASSAS, Va., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Communication Technologies, Inc. (COMTek) said today that it has voluntarily adjusted nearly 600 broadband over powerline (BPL) devices in Manassas, VA, and that there remains no "documented basis for further ham radio operator concerns" about the firm's nationally recognized BPL system in the city.

COMTek said that any meaningful issues or concerns about BPL in Manassas will be addressed in full and should be directed to Customer Service at (703) 365-8211. COMTek BPL network now serves 900 home and business subscribers in Manassas and is progressing steadily to the 1000th customer milestone. The Chantilly, Va.-based company's network in Manassas is the first commercial deployment of BPL in the nation to use a city-wide electricity grid to provide individual homes and businesses with direct "plug in" broadband access through electric sockets, rather than over phone or cable TV lines.
COMTek Vice President Walt Adams said: "Manassas is the first and also the best full-scale commercial deployment of BPL on a meaningful scale in the United States and we take great pride in the system, which has operated with virtually no hitches to date. In fact, we know of fewer than half a dozen ham radio operator complaints, each of which COMTek has gone to truly extraordinary lengths to address. COMTek stands by our service and the deployment of our equipment. We are not aware of any valid basis for the concerns of those who would deprive BPL broadband to Manassas families and small businesses. The opposition from these almost entirely non-Manassas individuals and their national organization appears to be grounded in a fundamental opposition to BPL rather than any hard facts."
COMTek indicated that it doesn't appreciate being attacked in what is clearly a campaign to turn back the clock on broadband in the United States. Adams said: "The facts are that we have done everything necessary -- and more! -- to address any genuine ham radio operator concerns. So, we are just going to keep on doing what we do best: providing low-cost, quality broadband services to consumers and business owners in Manassas."
As of mid-January, COMTek had completed 100 percent notching of all BPL devices (internal and external to customer premises) in the overhead areas of Manassas and is now engaged in ongoing monitoring of the BPL network. A total of 590 BPL-related devices in Manassas have been notched by COMTek in order to eliminate any potential interference issues.
